It's day one today. You pick up a book, excited to dive into new worlds or learn something fresh. In the beginning, you're absorbed, turning pages with enthusiasm. On the second day, life gets a bit busier, but you still manage to squeeze in some reading. By the third day, you are behind schedule at work, stuck in traffic, hosting a social event, and your book lies untouched. On the fourth day, you can't even remember where you left it. And by the fifth day, you remember your commitment but can't find the interest to continue.
So, if this sounds like you, you're not alone. Nearly 28.76% of us started a book but didn't finish it. This shows a basic human trait: we get bored fast. At first, new books are fun, with their shiny covers, aromatic smell, and the way they feel. As soon as the "newness" goes away, and everyday demands cut into reading time, we stop trying and start procrastinating. So, the question is, how do we refocus and complete what we started? Here are some tips to help you get back on track:
Establishing a specific time each day to read can create a habit that lasts a lifetime. Getting into reading was also a challenge for me, so I started reading every morning with my cup of tea. I enjoy this quiet time before the day gets hectic, keeping me calm and focused for the day.
After making reading a daily habit in the morning, it's become a natural part of my life without feeling forced. So, try blocking a daily slot that works best for you, and pair it with something you're already doing. For example, if you enjoy winding down before bed, spend 20 minutes reading after brushing your teeth, you could read during your post-exercise relaxation time or if you have extra time during your evening commute, try listening to audiobooks.
If you have a designated reading place, your brain will know it's time to focus. Make sure you're in a comfortable, quiet spot with good lighting that's free of distractions, so you can focus. Besides plants, I find a little sanctuary where I can escape into different worlds through books.
The biggest mistake we make is thinking about finishing the entire book instead of breaking it down into smaller, manageable goals. Everyone reads at their own pace—some like rabbits, some like tortoises—but the important part is, are we reading every day? Make it a goal to read a chapter, a few pages, or just 15 minutes daily.
I set a daily reading goal of two pages to keep myself motivated and less daunted. As I read steadily and see my progress, I feel satisfied. Reaching these small milestones each day will make you feel more motivated and less overwhelmed.
Bookmarks make it easy to remember where you left off. Also, jotting down brief notes or highlights is a good way to keep track of key points when you return to the book.
Distractions are everywhere in today's digital age. Be sure to switch to silent mode on your phone, turn off the TV, and close any unnecessary tabs on your computer. Creating a distraction-free environment makes it easier for you to focus solely on your reading.
To stay engaged with my book, I turn off my phone and leave it in another room. Also, I listen to soothing background music on headphones. This small step has made a huge difference in sticking with my book.
Sometimes, it's not you—it's the book. If you're genuinely not enjoying what you're reading, give it a fair chance, but don't be afraid to switch to a different book. Reading should be enjoyable, not a chore. Find topics that truly captivate your interest.
For instance, I often mix up my reading list to maintain interest. Recently, I shifted my focus to sustainability, a subject close to my heart. This change revived my enthusiasm for reading.
So, if a book isn't doing it for you, switch it up and discover what truly excites you!
Participating in a book club or reading group can motivate and inspire you. The more you discuss the book with others, the more your interest will be rekindled, and you'll gain new perspectives, making it more enjoyable. My online book club puts me in touch with like-minded people, shares insights, and motivates me to keep reading.
Think back to why you chose to read the book in the first place. Is it for relaxation, self-improvement, or just to enjoy a good story? The more you reconnect with your motivation, the easier it is to get over disinterest.
Also, remember that not every reading session will be perfect, so take breaks. Life happens, and we should be kind to ourselves. It's not just about finishing a book; it's about enjoying the journey. My reminder to myself is to take a day off if I need it and not be too harsh on myself for not reading every day.
Re-entering a book after a break can be challenging, but these strategies can help you get back into it. If you don't hit your reading goals in two days, two weeks, or even two months, don’t let discouragement stop you from reading again. Dust your book off and move forward. Even just a minute of reading today is better than not reading at all. Happy reading!
